President Nasheed was ousted - probably by a military coup on February 7, 2012. The newly-appointed president, Waheed has claimed, however, that Nasheed has decided to step down. The latest political turmoil follows weeks of protests against    Nasheed which were fuelled by a judicial crisis and violent actions from Islamist parties who opposed several government decisions. The overall situation might be exacerbated by any conclusion of the independent inquiry, a still unclear election agenda and the time required to enforce the necessary constitutional changes, which would have to tackle issues such as national identity and political influence within the judiciary. Hence, a risk of intensified tensions and further clashes is at hand, against a background of increasing and looming radical Islamist considerations in the political debate. The political and security outlook is very uncertain.
