On 14 January Incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou, Chair of the Kuomintang Party, won the presidential elections.
His re-election indicates the population’s overall satisfaction with his balanced policy under his first mandate,
which was marked by significantly improved diplomatic relations and economic ties with mainland China since
2008, which benefits Taipei, given its high economic interdependence. During his second term, President Ma will
most likely continue his open policy towards mainland China but will also avoid threatening Taiwan’s sovereignty.
As the elections showed, a large proportion of the population still supports the special status of Taiwan to preserve
its independence, despite Beijing's displeasure. Therefore, the status of Taiwan remains a very sensitive issue and
will undoubtedly remain long controversial issue with Beijing.
